Writing

Intent

Our writing curriculum aims:

  1. To equip children with the ability to write fluently, with detail to interest the reader across a range of genres.
  2. To develop the use of high-quality vocabulary, using the range of writing techniques to describe and add detail.
  3. To equip children with the ability to organise and structure their writing as appropriate to the genre that they’re writing in.
  4. To develop the accurate use of grammar and use of a range of punctuation accurately.
  5. To develop handwriting skills, making sure that work is well presented and neat.
  6. To teach children spelling skills in order to be able to spell correctly.

Implementation

Our children are provided with a variety of opportunities to develop, extend and deepen their writing skills in and across each phase of education. In EYFS, the learning of writing follows the Early Years Foundation Stages Framework. Children are given opportunities to extend their understanding of language learning through play and investigation, developing their characteristics of learning. The National Curriculum 2014 underpins the learning and teaching in KS1 and KS2.

Teaching of writing

In English lessons we use high quality texts to underpin the teaching of the writing sequence.

During the teaching sequence the children will learn:

  • How to identify the purpose of their writing and consider their audience
  • How to use a quality text identifying key features to underpin their own writing
  • How to use a WAGOLL (What a Good One Looks Like) to unpick the structure and language features
  • Grammar and punctuation and how to apply this into their writing
  • From modelled activities by the class teacher how to apply all of the skills that they have learnt
  • How to revise and redraft their writing for improvement
  • How to present their writing and publish it for an audience

The types of writing covered each term are carefully planned:

AutumnSpringSummer
NarrativeNarrativeNarrative
Non-FictionNon-FictionNon-Fiction
Poetry Poetry

Where appropriate the text and genre covered will link to other areas of the curriculum, for example, history or science.

Spelling

The Read Write Inc Spelling programme is used throughout KS2. It is also used with year two children who have a secure understanding of phonics. This programme builds on the Read Write Inc phonics programme delivered in early years and key stage 1.

Handwriting

The school uses seven main stages for the teaching of handwriting. These stages are fluid depending on the developmental needs of the child.

Impact

Teachers use formative assessment to analyse writing and build any areas for development into their planning.

Summative assessment is when we get an overview of where the children are at a point in time in relation to aged related expectations.  In order to do this, we have an assessment framework for writing.

Writing is moderated within school and across the trust.
