Year 3/4

Welcome to Rowan class!

Our topic this term is Fair trade chocolate. In Geography we will be learning about what fair trade means and how land can be used. We will be linking our topic to our history and learning about the Maya. We will learn about when and where the Maya lived, what their daily life was like and how they have impacted our lives. We will look at how they ate chocolate and maybe even try some ourselves!

We will start the term looking at explanation texts. Using the model text ‘The Teacher Pleaser’, we will work out what makes a good explanation text, thinking about the language and structural features. We will practise using the language features and write innovated versions of the text. For our hot writes, we will design our own machines and independently write explanations to explain how they work.

Later in the half term, we will look at different types of poetry. We will start with some performance poetry, thinking about how to use intonation, tempo and volume to give effective performances. We will also look at Haiku and Cinquain poems, identifying their key features before writing our own.

We will start the term learning about multiplication and division. We will learn different written methods and think about which are the most efficient. After this, we will move onto a unit on measurement. We will learn about equivalent measurements and how we can use these to find perimeters. Year 4 will also learn about how to find the area of shapes.

Don’t forget!

Forest School – Wednesday afternoons. Children should bring old, warm, waterproof clothing as we aim to get out whatever the weather. Please only send in clothes which you do not mind getting dirty. A carrier bag for muddy wellies is also useful. Children who do not have appropriate clothing will not be able to join us outside.

PE – Tuesday and Fridays. Children must have their PE kit in school on these days. They are welcome to bring their kit in at the start of the week and leave it in school until Friday.

Useful Websites

Useful websites for maths

  • TT Rockstars
This is a great website for children to practise their times tables. Children all have their own logins which are stuck in the learning journals.
Another fun way to practise times tables. Logins are stuck in learning journals
  • Hit the button
Lots of games covering lots of areas of maths. Hit the button is a favourite for practising times tables.

Useful websites for other curriculum areas

Class blog

In our computing lessons, we are learning about editing images. We have learnt how to crop images and have used this to help us change the composition of images. We had fun making ourselves look like Ancient Maya tribes people!

Learning to read is vital for our children and it will help them to achieve their full potential in all areas of the curriculum.

Please read with your child every day. Just 10 minutes a day will help them to develop their skills. All students have learning journals for you to record your reading in and this can help children to complete their reading rainbows in schools. Each completed rainbow means that the child can choose their own book to keep.

Spellings are stuck into learning journals each Friday and will be tested the following Friday.

Times tables

Times tables are vital for children to make good progress in maths. Children will have weekly times tables tests on Tuesdays.

TT Rockstars is a great way to practise times tables and all children have their login stuck in their learning journal.
